Samuel J. Koonce, age 80, of 843 North State St., Marion went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 22, 2010, at 9:04 p.m. in the Marion General Hospital. He was born on March 13, 1930 in Kinston, N.C. His mother, Phoebie Koonce Croom, preceded him in death. Samuel married Jessie Wilson on November 5, 1952 in Kinston, N.C. and she survives. Also surviving are 4 sons; Nathaniel Koonce of Norfolk, Va., Samuel J. (Cynthia Faye) Koonce Jr. of Toledo, Oh., Ronald & Christopher Koonce both of Marion, 3 daughters; Caroline Chapman of Kinston, N.C., Kathleen Clemons and Pricilla Koonce both of Marion, a brother; Fountain Koonce of Washington D.C., 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. Preceeding him in death along with his mother were a son; Samuel Koonce, a grandson, and a great great grandson. A marion resident for the past 56 years, Sam was a member of the Kings Temple Apostolic Church and president of the Marion Ostomy Club. He was a union steward with the Marion Power Shovel Co. where he worked in the maintenance dept. for 37 years before retirement. The funeral service will be conducted by Elder Tyrone Kaiser on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. in the Kings Temple Apostolic Church with burial to follow in the Grand Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday at the church from 2-4 and 6-7 p.m. At 7:00 p.m. a tribute with personal comments will begin at the church.
