Beverly Jean Bish

Beverly Jean Bish, age 77, of LaRue Prospect Rd. S. and recently of Primrose Retirement Community, Marion, went to Heaven on Saturday July 3, 2010 at 9:00 PM at Heartland Rehabilitation Center.
She was born October 5, 1932 on True Ave. in Marion to the late Herman E. and Opal M. (Henry) Hinton. She is survived by her husband, Robert G. Bish, children, William Ferrall, Nantucket, MA, Greg (Kendra) Ferrall, St. Marys, Ohio; and Kathi (Brian) Moore, Marion; Terri (Rick Jackson) Hendricks, Bellville; Tim (Jackie) Bish, Waldo; Lori (Jeff) Williams, Marion; Jennifer (Danny) Bash, Marion; grandchildren, Zach, Ali, and Macy Ferrall, Ben and Jacob Moore, Lacey Hibner, Kaleigh and Amanda Imwalle, Eric and Amber Hendricks, Mindy Bish, Donna Bosh, Dusty and Heather Blevins, Jessica Hoffman, Hallie, Megan, and Daniel Bash; five great grandchildren and mother-in-law, Ruth Bish, Marion. One grandchild is deceased.
On January 20, 1949 she married Bill M. Ferrall, in Greenup, KY. He passed in 1982. She married Robert on August 16, 1985 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Marion.
She is also survived by two sisters, Sharon (Mayhon) Huckaba, Marion; Rita Wurth, Mansfield; brother, Don (Annie) Hinton, Marion; sister-in-law, Elaine Hinton, Mansfield; special friend and cousin, Pat Lawrence, Marion; and numerous nieces and nephews. Three brothers are deceased, Herman Jr., Robert, and Larry Hinton.
Jean attended Glenwood Elementary, Edison Junior High, and graduated from Harding High School in 1950. As a junior high student she won the Marion County Spelling Bee and placed fourteenth in the state. During high school she worked at Rizer's Grocery Store. She attended Ohio Northern University in 1960 where she completed a two year cadet teaching program. She began her teaching career at Claridon, moved to Morral in 1965 and then came to the Marion City Schools in 1967. She taught at Oakland and Pearl St. Elementaries. After 37 years of teaching, she retired in 1993. Over the years she frequently attended classes, one at a time, and received her Master's degree in 1971 from The Ohio State University.
Although the majority of her career was as a fifth grade teacher, she also taught second, third, and fourth grades. She often had split classes. Jean touched the lives of many children and tried very hard to follow her former students throughout their lives. She kept an index card on each student. Over the years she has added facts about many. Her love and compassion for her students underscored her professionalism.
Jean's other interests included her love for country music. She was an avid reader, collector of coins, and a crossword aficionado. Being the oldest sister, she often organized family gatherings. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren. She enjoyed following the Cleveland Indians and once met Jim Thome. She was a quiet servant of the Lord and often gave to causes and individuals anonymously.
Her affiliations included memberships at Wesley and Prospect St. United Methodist Churches, The Ohio State University Alumni Association of Marion County, MEA, OEA, and NEA, and Retired Teachers of Marion. She was past President of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of women educators. For many years she was active with the IRA, International Reading Association, and enjoyed bringing children's authors to Marion for the Young Author's Conference. She helped her first husband organize REACT, a CB radio club devoted to providing safety for the community.
A celebration service will be lead by Pastors Nancy Goulet and Vicky Powers-Smith on Thursday, July 8 at 10:30am at Boyd-Born Funeral Home. Calling hours will be observed on Wednesday, July 7 from 5-9pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Marion Cemetery. A meal will follow the service at Prospect St. United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions can be made to Prospect St. United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.

Our thoughts are with Jean's entire family.  She was one of my favorite teachers and favorite people.  Even though Bev and I can not be there in person, please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.

    Dear Greg, Bill, and Kathi,
We were so sorry to learn of Jean's serious illness and death. She was really a wonderful person.  I enjoyed our "chats" (and bragging) about our grandchildren!  I know that she will be missed by everyone who knew her especially her family and friends.  I'm sorry that we won't be able to come over the the funeral home as I don't want to leave Jim that long at this time.  Do know that we care.  Sincerely, Louise & Jim

Hold tight to the memories. I will always remember Aunt Jean taking me shopping for my high school graduation dress. It was a real girls day out and she was so fun. She will be missed.

  • Vanessia Fragmin - Jul. 6, 2010

My heart goes out to the family and I will keep you in my prayers. I can only imagine the great celebration and homecoming Jean received as she went home to be with our Lord and father. As Jesus promises those who believe in Him , accept Him as their savior, and serve Him-this is not an end for Jean but a new life in heaven. May God comfort her family and bring each of them a sense of peace, grace, mercy and show His abundant love during the days ahead.

  • Step-daughter Terri - Jul. 5, 2010

Jean will be forever missed. I don't know if she ever really realized what a difference she made in my life. She was truely a mentor and someone that I looked up to. She was a strong and brave woman that battled cancer and several other heath issues before the Lord took her home. I will be forever greatful for having her in my life.
