James W. West

James W. West, age 81, of 17 North Arch Street, Dellroy, Ohio, died Sunday morning, January 29, 2012 in Union Hospital at Dover after a brief illness.

He retired in 1992 after 48 years of service with the Bowerston Shale Company where he worked as a mill operator.

He was born December 7, 1930 in Bellaire, Ohio and was the son of the late Eldridge Seabrook and  Margaret Sellers Seabrook West. His step-father was the late Elmer R. West.  In addition to his parents and step-father, he was preceded in death by a brother Roger West.

Jim was a 1948 graduate of the former Dellroy High School and attended the Dellroy Church of the Nazarene.  He proudly served his country as a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He was a member of the Dellroy I.O.O.F. Lodge #706, the Dellroy American Legion Post #475, and the Dellroy Ruritan Club.  Jim was always community minded, as he was currently serving as a member of the Dellroy Village Council.  He had also served as the Marshall for the Village of Dellroy in the 1960's and held the position of Dellroy Village Street Commissioner for eight years, and was a former member of the Dellroy Community Volunteer Fire Department. Jim could commonly be seen driving around the area in his yellow replica 1929 Model A antique car, which he frequently drove in area parades.

He is survived by his wife Virginia C. Hoffee West, whom he married September 4, 1954, his son, James M. West of Dellroy, two sisters, Mrs. Keith (Bettie) Morgan and Mrs. Carl B. (Maxine) Toot, both of New Philadelphia, O., several nieces and nephews, and his pet dog "Rosie".

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 2, 2012 in the Baxter-Gardner Funeral Home at Sherrodsville with Pastor David Kessell  officiating.  Interment will follow in the Leavittsville Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 5 until 8:00 P.M. in the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Jim's memory be made to a charity or organization of their choice.  To leave an online condolence message, please visit the funeral home website.

  • Liz, Penny, Tammy & family - Feb. 8, 2012

We would like to send you and Jimmy our condolences for your loss. We feel terrible for not being there as we just found out. What a terrific man you shared your lives with! He loved his family very much! Jim was always so kind and always had a joke or story to tell. Always ready to give a helping hand, advise, or an ear. I could go on and on. He will be missed by all of us, but he left us with many cherished memories! Our thoughts are with you!

  • Jeff & Jeanette Nolen - Feb. 2, 2012

Please accept our heartfelt condolences at this time of loss. Jim was one of a kind and I don't know of a time when he didn't make my day better when I would cross paths with him. His stories were great, but he was even better. In recent days, I was always 'going to go see Jim soon'. I didn't and I will always be sorry for that. Jeanette and I have been struggling with some sickness and it hurts that we're not able to get out to the services to honor our friend Jim. We always have prayed for you all and even more so now. God bless!
